I’m a product engineer and writer.

I build and operate software systems, with a focus on translating complex operational problems into tools and abstractions that are easy to understand and build on.

This site is where I write about the ideas that shape how I think — including software, leadership, endurance sports, and working within real constraints.

My story

If I had to explain everything that guides what I do in as few points as possible there are four things that have shaped me the most. First, I loved going to Cracker Barrel when I was young. I couldn't wait to see if there were any new puzzle games to solve there. Sitting with a problem and working out a solution is my favorite way to spend my time. Second, my family always commented on how helpful I was when I was young. I don't know if that shaped me or was inherently there from the start but helping people, recognizing when and how they're struggling and what I can do to change that, brings me the most happiness. Third, I've got Ankylosing Spondylitis. That has forced me to be very concious about my health and what I eat. That has led me to a love of cooking and an exploration of endurance sports. And last, I take very little joy from things that I buy but a great deal of joy from things that I make, build or grow. Even if a better version could be bought, I'd rather learn, plan, practice, struggle and end up with something imperfect but meaninful.
